At 14.1¢ per kilowatt-hour, electricity in Iowa costs 14% less than the US average of 16.5¢. Cheap power is good news for your bill and bad news for solar economics — each kilowatt-hour the panels produce displaces a cheap one, so the system takes longer to repay.
A 6 kW array in Iowa produces about 8,218 kWh a year, well above the national middle. Sunshine is the one input here that no policy change can take away.
Iowa has full-retail net metering. Every kilowatt-hour you export earns the same 14.1¢ you would have paid to buy it, so the grid acts as a free battery and there is no penalty for producing more than you use during the day. This is the single biggest reason payback here beats states with the same amount of sun.
Iowa has no state-level rebate or tax credit at present, so the $17,100 installed price is what you pay. With Section 25D gone, there is nothing federal to subtract either — this is the first year in over a decade where that is true.
A 6 kW system — the size that suits most Iowa households — runs about $17,100 installed, at $2.85 a watt before anything comes off. Nothing comes off that here: no state rebate, no state tax credit, and no federal credit since Section 25D expired on 31 December 2025. Prices move with roof complexity, panel choice and how busy local installers are — a quote $0.40 a watt either side of this is normal. Smaller systems cost more per watt; larger ones less, though sizing beyond your own use is not penalised, since exports earn 14.1¢.
